Follow the 2022 flood event which severely impacted communities on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, the State Government undertook an inquiry into the circumstances and issues related to this event. The Kensington Association has been consulting and discussing matters relating to the Maribyrnong River on behalf of residents for over 20 years. Our task is to preserve its beauty and its positive contribution to the Kensington/West Melbourne precincts, as well as to protect residents and businesses along its banks – particularly from flood events.

 

In 2004 The Association participated in consultations with regard to the construction of the Flemington Racecourse bund wall. Together with local Councils adjoining the river and Flemington Racecourse, we objected to the construction of the wall. Our primary concern was that in the event of a flood it would exacerbate the negative impact on adjoining communities. The recollections of those from The Association involved in consultations with the State Government officials and the VRC, is that they were superficial, and that the construction of the wall would proceed despite local objections. ……..
